The Arms Control Association (ACA), founded in 1971, is a national nonpartisan membership organization dedicated to promoting public understanding of and support for effective arms control policies. Through its public education and media programs and its magazine, Arms Control Today (ACT), ACA provides policy-makers, the press and the interested public with authoritative information, analysis and commentary on arms control proposals, negotiations and agreements, and related national security issues. In addition to the regular press briefings ACA holds on major arms control developments, the Association's staff provides commentary and analysis on a broad spectrum of issues for journalists and scholars both in the United States and abroad.

Association to Unite the Democracies

The Association to United the Democracies is an organization dedicated to uniting democratic nations. They envision increased cooperation between all the peoples of the world that will ultimately lead to greater peace, more freedom, and the eventual integration of democratic nations. It is their belief that greater cooperation and federation will create an environment in which fledgling democracies will thrive and non-democracies will seek democracy. British American Security Information Council (BASIC)

BASIC is a progressive and independent analysis and advocacy organization which researches and provides a critical examination of global security issues, including nuclear policies, military strategies, armaments and disarmament. BASIC assists in the development of global security policies, policy-making and the assessment of policy priorities, and promotes public awareness and understanding of these policies and of policy-making in Europe and the US.

With governing directors and offices on both sides of the Atlantic, BASIC facilitates the exchange of information and analysis on these global security issues in order to foster informed debate.

Bulletin of Atomic Scientists

The Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists was founded in 1945 by scientists who worked on the Manhattan Project at the University of Chicago and were deeply concerned about the potential future use of nuclear weapons and nuclear war. The mission of the Bulletin is to educate citizens about global security issues, especially the continuing dangers posed by nuclear and other weapons of mass destruction, and the appropriate roles of nuclear technology.

Council for a Livable World

The Council was founded by Leo Szilard, who recognized the importance of controlling the nuclear menace and felt an organization was needed to influence and educate Congress and the public on the dangers of nuclear war. The primary activities are lobbying Congress on nuclear arms control issues and being a political action committee that raises money for candidates that have shown a commitment to reducing nuclear weapons stockpiles.


Federation of American Scientists

The Federation of American Scientists is a public-interest group that has worked to control the arms race, protect the environment, ensure the rights of scientists, promote international scientific exchange and, in general, prevent the misuse of science and technology in our society.

Friends Committee on National Legislation (FCNL)

FCNL brings the concerns, experiences, and testimonies of the Religious Society of Friends (Quakers) to policy decisions. FCNL advocates reconciliation among nations and peoples and works to eliminate militarism, coercion, and injustice. Efforts also promote civil rights, self-determination of Native Americans, restoration of confidence in government, economic and employment opportunities, and adequate housing, education, and health care.

Institute for Defense and Disarmament Studies

The Institute for Defense and Disarmament Studies (IDDS) is an independent non-profit center dedicated to research, alternative policy studies, and public education on ways to reduce the risk of war, minimize military spending, and foster democratic institutions. For more than four decades, IPS has transformed ideas into action for peace, justice, and the environment. The Institute has strengthened and linked social movements through articulation of root principles and fundamental rights, research and analysis on current events and issues, and connections to policymakers, academics, and activists at all levels. As a multi-issue think tank that has worked with the movements that shaped the late 20th Century, from Civil Rights onwards, they offer a cross-cutting analysis with a historical perspective.

Institute for Science and International Security (ISIS)

ISIS is a non-profit, non-partisan institution dedicated to informing the public about science and policy issues affecting international security. Its efforts focus on stopping the spread of nuclear weapons, bringing about greater transparency of nuclear activities worldwide, and achieving deep reductions in nuclear arsenals. ISIS's projects integrate technical, scientific, and policy research in order to build a sound foundation for a wide variety of efforts to reduce the threat posed by nuclear weapons to U.S. and international security.

Institute of World Affairs

The Institute conducts a range of programs designed to prevent violent conflict and to advance post-conflict peacebuilding. These programs include training seminars, both in the U.S. and abroad, designed to enhance professional skills in conflict resolution and infrastructure development. Lawyers Committee on Nuclear Policy

The Lawyers' Committee on Nuclear Policy (LCNP) is a national nonprofit educational association that uses national and international law to promote peace and disarmament. LCNP has been a vital link between policy makers, legal scholars and activists. LCNP provides legal information and analysis to policy makers, diplomats, activists, and the media on disarmament and international law.


Matsunaga Institute for Peace at the University of Hawaii

The Matsunaga Institute for Peace is an academic community designed to explore, develop, and share knowledge of peace through teaching, research, publication, and public service. The Institute promotes peace personally, locally, nationally, and globally through nonviolent and compassionate means. By addressing issues of conflict management, community building, and reduction of violence, the Institute approaches its goal: a world at peace.


National Academies

The National Academies perform an unparalleled public service by bringing together committees of experts in all areas of scientific and technological endeavor. These experts serve pro bono to address critical national issues and give advice to the federal government and the public.

The purpose of the Pugwash Conferences is to bring together, from around the world, influential scholars and public figures concerned with reducing the danger of armed conflict and seeking cooperative solutions for global problems. Meeting in private as individuals, rather than as representatives of governments or institutions, Pugwash participants exchange views and explore alternative approaches to arms control and tension reduction with a combination of candor, continuity, and flexibility seldom attained in official East-West and North-South discussions and negotiations.


Russian American Nuclear Security Advisory Council

The Russian American Nuclear Security Advisory Council (RANSAC) is an independent, non-governmental research organization dedicated to increasing the security of weapons of mass destruction (WMD) and reducing proliferation risks. RANSAC’s priority is supporting the cooperative threat reduction agenda between the U.S., Russia, and the other former Soviet states and promoting its expansion to address global proliferation dangers.
